What can I say about my 20+ years around some of the greatest names in the business. I grew up watching in the late-seventies/early eighties the greatest rivalry of all time-Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs Ric "The Nature Boy" Flair. I would get up and watch Mid Atlantic Wrestling with Bob Caudle and David Crockett. I hung on their every word. The excitement of that time in the sport for being a Carolinian was so cool....Steamboat, Flair, Mulligan, Valentine, Rhodes, McDaniel, Von Raschke etc..WOW!!!! I would venture to the events at The original Charlotte Coliseum on Independence Blvd which is now known as Cricket Arena and stand down near the backdoor to get a look at all the guys. Steamboat was just so pretty to look at and Flair was just the coolest. It was fun to get pics of them and autographs. They were much more accessible and took time with the fans then happens now.
Then late eighties, I got to see Youngbloods, Magnum TA, Tully Blanchard, Baby Doll, Scott Hall, Danny Spivey, etc. I even got to see the late great Andre The Giant in person and man he was HUGE! I start doing artwork of some of the wrestlers especially Steamboat and Youngblood and they loved it. I had articles in The Young Observer which was a section in The Charlotte Observer. I became known as a HUGE popular wrestling fan. I even got to met and become friends with to this very day with Bonnie Steamboat who is the mother of Richie and ex-wife of Ricky. I even did a very huge scrapbook as a gift to Ricky and Bonnie when she was pregnant with Richie of EVERYTHING I had collected of Ricky from articles, ticket stubs, pics etc. I got a very sweet letter from Ricky thanking me and I hold it dear to my heart even today. Bonnie has even been in my life and has seen and met my wonderful 5 year old son, Morgan. She is Aunt Bonnie to him.
1985, I went to a private art school in Atlanta, GA. WOW! I got to go to TBS every week and Omni events. I got to be around, Flair, The Road Warriors, The Rock n Roll Express etc. I still did a lot of drawings for the next years and had a blast. Even sold one to Ric Flair (like the same one he signed for my dad that hangs in my parents livingroom). Then a major wrestler entered the picture and he became one of my all time favorite people to get to talk to and just get to meet him as a great human being - Sting (Steve Borden). He was one of my biggest supporters of my artwork like The Road warriors and Ricky Morton of The Rock n Roll Express. Steve can not be ever duplicated with his genuine heart, great smile and he would always speak to me and point me out in the crowd when he saw me. When he won his first major title, I draw him a pic and he got me backstage to say hello to him. Sting, Road Warriors, Luger, Mean Mark Callous, Sid Vicious, Rick Rude, Curt Henning, Kerry Von Erich, Ultimate Warrior, The Stenier Brothers, Brian Pillman, Stunning Steve Austin etc....what a great time it was to see all the wrestlers from WCW & WWF.
Life has taken me in a different path but my friends and I still watch wrestling and cry hard when one that we had met passes like Rude, Henning and especially Hawk. I guess we thought they would live forever. You will read special tributes to some that I really got to meet alot and adore.
My heart has and always will be Ricky "Punky" Morton, he just was so much to me. He and I share a special kindred bond that is very rare for people. It is easy and so heartfelt when we hug and tell each other "I love you." He is one of the rare people in my life that I would move heaven and earth for.
My purpose is to let this generation of fans see the excitement that I got to witness first hand thru stories - not as good as Missy Hyatt - and behind the scenes pictures.
